TERM ONE

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Curriculum focuses on four areas: drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. The Elements of Design are reviewed (line, colour, shape, texture, form, space and value). The Principles of Design are formally introduced with a specific focus on unity and harmony in grade 7. Through various mediums, students will explore these areas through the critical and creative processes.

Mediums Explored: pencil crayon, marker, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic and wire.

Assessment: Understanding of elements and principles of design, use of criteria and medium in the creative process, and communication of ideas in the critical analysis process using criteria-based rubric and journal responses.

Dance

Students will apply the creative process and the critical analysis process to various dance forms using the elements of dance (body, space, time, energy, and relationship). They will create, analyse and explore various dance pieces of past and present in connection with cultural experiences.

Assessment: Class/group discussions, responses and activities including at least one performance. Dance occurs in term one only.

TERM TWO

Visual Arts

Two and three-dimensional artworks focusing on how these elements create unity and harmony (Principles of Design), art appreciation focusing on the Group of Seven and an artwork critique
Mediums Explored: wire, tempera paint and printmaking

Assessment: Understanding of elements and principles of design, use of criteria and medium in the creative process, and communication of ideas in the critical analysis process using criteria-based rubric and journal responses.

Drama

Students will apply the creative process and the critical analysis process to various drama works using the elements of drama (role/character, relationship, time and place, tension, and focus and emphasis). They will create, analyse and explore various drama pieces of past and present in connection with cultural experiences.

Assessment: Class/group discussions, responses and activities including at least one performance. Drama occurs in term two only.
